JOU6962 - Investigations and Campaigns

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the nature and role of investigations and campaigns in journalism and the editorial treatments relevant to them for both print and online
2 Demonstrate an understanding of and an ability to apply legal and regulatory frameworks relevant to investigative journalism
3 Identify and locate relevant specialised sources and stories
4 Undertake research and interviews for specialised news and features material
5 Demonstrate independence, initiative and self-management in undertaking individual journalism projects

Content:

This module is designed to help students to develop practical skills, along with the legal and regulatory knowledge, involved in investigative and campaigning journalism. It will look at the ideas underpinning investigations and campaigns, the desired outcomes and the potential legacies for the news media. It will focus on the practical research and writing skills involved in these two key areas of journalism and consider how online audience interaction and social networking can but utilised to support these areas. Students will build on both their news and feature writing skills in order to develop their ability to research, plan and write about subjects in substantial depth. They will have the opportunity to develop their own portfolio of relevant journalistic material which reflects the need to utilise both print and online platforms.
