Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the nature and role of investigations and campaigns in journalism
Demonstrate a systematic understanding of the different aspects of multi-platform news delivery and their practical application
Identify and locate relevant specialised sources and stories
Undertake research and interviews for specialised news and features material
Demonstrate independence, initiative and self-management in undertaking individual journalism projects

Content:

Practical Journalism 3 introduces students to specialised fields of journalism that they are likely to encounter in their professions, with a focus on Investigative & Campaigning Journalism in Semester 1. Students will look in detail at the work involved in these two key journalistic fields, with particular emphasis on the practical skills, including legal knowledge, organisational skills, and the planning of desired outcomes and legacies of major investigations and campaigns. Semester 2 centres on the burgeoning area of Multiplatform Journalism, looking at the skills involved in delivering stories across a variety of platforms, the challenge of the blogosphere, audience relationship and the role of citizen journalism.

Although there will be references made to academic material during teaching, this module is largely practical and is designed to hone the writing skills of students.
