Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of English law affecting the media
2 Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the main principles of English law affecting the press and broadcast regulatory arrangements
3 Apply key areas of law to practical journalistic scenarios and demonstrate understanding of safe news practice
4 Critically evaluate key areas of law relating to journalists

Content:

1. The Main Principles of English law, that affect the media.
2. The laws pertaining to contempt, copyright, defamation, innocent submission, who can be sued, libel and privacy.
3. The laws affecting the press and broadcast regulatory arrangements.
4. Human Rights Legislation.
5. Court reporting.
