HIS4602 - Discovering British History 1: Surveys and Sources

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate a broad understanding of the outline of British history through a study of significant turning points, and an in-depth and sophisticated knowledge of a significant event in British history.
(2) Define and deploy key historical concepts such as continuity and change and cause and effect/impact to produce effective analysis.
(3) Conduct basic historical research, identifying and using both primary and secondary sources critically and effectively.
(4) Exhibit the necessary skills to communicate historical knowledge and understanding in coherent, argumentative, and well-evidenced formats.

Content:

Students will be introduced to British history through a survey of key turning points (eg Norman Conquest, Reformation, Industrial Revolution) and an in-depth study of a significant event in British history (e.g. Boudicca’s Revolt). They will develop understanding of essential historical concepts, such as causation, and will learn basic historical skills, such as primary source criticism and research skills. They will also learn how to communicate their historical knowledge and understanding effectively and with good use of evidence through essays and reports.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning and teaching will take place through workshops, involving a range of methodologies such as tutor presentations, groupwork and discussion, informal presentations by students, and role play.
