On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
(1) analyse management qualities, behaviours, leadership styles and school cultures;
(2) review the principles of change management;
(3) evaluate the importance of managing and motivating staff and learners and developing teamwork;
(4) apply the principles of leadership and management to their role.
This course will include study of the following topics, which will include consideration of management and leadership theories and application to the specific work contexts in which participants are involved:
• values, vision and organisational culture;
• strategic development planning, policy formulation and implementation;
• school effectiveness: identifying and measuring;
• managing people; team building; motivation and care;
• managing change: breaking down barriers, planning and implementation;
• presentation of participants’ enquiry work.
In addressing the above, participants will:
• identify practical issues in their own workplaces
• compare and contrast their experiences with others
• relate their practical knowledge to theoretical perspectives
• use these perspectives to gain a greater understanding of the workplace
At Level 5 it is expected that students will know and understand the essential mechanics of HE study and be able to work more independently in resourcing and researching their learning. Work at Level 5 will emphasize the application and analysis of theory and develop the skills of critical reasoning.
A key learning and teaching strategy will be to support students in providing critical feedback from their work-based tasks, relating practice to theory
The module will run over 6 weeks
