FSL5102 - Evaluating Theory and Practice

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Identify a line of enquiry and negotiate, plan, design, implement and evaluate work-based data
(2) Recognise ethical and practical issues relating to practitioner research.
(3) Analyse and present their findings, reflecting critically and constructively on their own learning processes and outcome
(4) Reflect critically on their findings in relation to the literature

Content:

Lectures will focus on the processes of undertaking an individual study and writing a report e.g. how to collect data, issues of reliability and validity, how to structure a research report, the mechanics of referencing and producing a bibliography

Students will use small group and individual tutorials to:
- define a topic or theme which is of intrinsic interest and establishing a line of enquiry;
- review the literature and engage in critical reflection;
- aid in the collating , sequencing and analysing of relevant material.
- identify and solve problems involved in the process of drafting and redrafting;
- examine ethical and practical issues related to practitioner research

Learning and Teaching Information:

At Level 5 it is expected that students will know and understand the essential mechanics of HE study and be able to work more independently in resourcing and researching their learning. Work at Level 5 will emphasize the application and analysis of theory and develop the skills of critical reasoning.
A key teaching and learning strategy used in this module will be ways of guiding students towards independent reading and research
This module will include a review of student’s personal action plans for T4 & T5
This module will run over 6 weeks

001 Critical report 1 x 3000 words (end of module) 70%
