FSL4132 - Supporting Learners With Special Educational Needs

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. chart the development of policy and provision for, pupils with SEN;
2. demonstrate an understanding of the concept of support;
3. employ and comment on techniques of systematic observation to assist in the identification and assessment of SEN;
4. identify the needs of pupils at the school action, school action plus and statemented stages of the Code of Practice;
5. demonstrate knowledge of systems for the management of the pupils with SEN with whom they work, including their contribution to their teaching; development, monitoring and evaluation of action plans, IEPs, IBPs, target setting and working with inter-agency professionals

Content:

The module will include:

• an awareness of the special educational needs that are most frequently encountered in schools;
• statutory framework and school policies for example SEN, Inclusion, Disability Discrimination, Health and Safety, Child Protection, Every Child Matters;
• the concept of inclusive education;\
• SEN Code of Practice: Stages, Statements, Reviews, monitoring and evaluation procedures : e.g. IEPs, IBPs, PSPs, reviews, inter-agency collaboration;
• the roles of professionals working with learners with SEN: including Teachers, TAs, Learning Mentors, Transition Workers and Outside Agencies;
• the nature and range of support for pupils with SEN: the skills and methods of differentiation, maximising progress to ensure attainment of pupils with SEN

Learning and Teaching Information:

Level 4 module will provide a foundation level of knowledge and understanding of supporting learning. In addition to the required subject knowledge, the module will introduce students to key skills and enable them to develop the necessary academic skills.

A key learning and teaching strategy for this module will be to teach students to use work-based observation and enquiry to support group discussion and debate.

This module will run over 6 weeks.

001 Appraisal of resource use 1 x 1000 words (end of module) 30%
