FEY4122 - Creating the Ideal Environment for Young Children

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate an understanding of the ideal physical environment for young children
(2) Explain the importance of building relationships with young children and how this can be achieved in a range of circumstances including family, nursery, school etc.
(3) Consider issues related to transitions within young children’s lives and those related to separation and early independence
(4) Devise relevant enrichment activities for the children within their work setting

Content:

This module introduces students to creating an appropriate environment within a range of settings including at home, school, nursery, health related setting or club. Students will be expected to relate their studies to a range of settings within their own experience including their work place.

The module will include a study of:
• Health and safety issues
• Nurturing activities and relationships including the effective use of ICT, toys and the external environment
• Building relationships with young children
• Needs assessment and provision
• How to make observations and record findings

Within this module, students will be expected to demonstrate ICT skills through the researching and presentation of their planning and needs analysis/ observation.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will be through a range of lectures, workshops and tutorials. Students will be expected to draw on a range of sources including their own working experiences. Group discussion and tasks will form a significant proportion of the College based learning to develop relevant analytical skills. Students will record their development within a Personal Development Log.
