On successful complete of the module students will be able to:
(1) communicate effectively and confidently in writing
(2) demonstrate an understanding of the role of language in the creation of meaning
(3) analyse and comment on the formal and aesthetic dimensions of literary texts
(4) express a range of ideas in registers appropriate to purpose and audience
In Semester 1, the focus will be primarily upon Academic and Expository Writing.
Based on the reading of literary texts, students will address issues of style, voice, structure, editing and presentation. Whilst the main area of study will be the literary essay, emphasis will be placed upon the transferable nature of writing skills.
In Semester 2, the focus will be primarily upon Creative Writing. Students will explore the techniques of both prose narrative and verse, as well as interrogating the distinction between ‘critical’ and ‘creative’ writing.
The course will be taught in seminars, which will mainly make use of small-group workshop activities, upplemented by presentations by the tutor, informal presentations by students, and plenary discussion. Portfolios will be discussed throughout the course, and feedback will be offered to draw upon when preparing assessed essays.
