EDS4042 - Cultures, Societies and Schools

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 Express an awareness of population changes and trends in the education population from primary to higher education
2 Evaluate the effect of diversity on individuals’ opportunities to access education at all levels
3 Analyse how self identity impacts on attitudes and engagement with education
4 Reflect on perspectives on the purpose of education, education’s influence on social identity, social change and socialisation

Content:

This module is sociological in nature, exploring the impact of cultural and social differences on an individual’s access and attitude to education and the perceived outcomes. In analyzing this area students will be expected to draw information and data from a range of sources including national statistical data; educational research and case study reports as well as investigating media portrayals of society, culture and education.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
