EDS4032 - Theories and Experiments from Binet to Today

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the rationale behind alternative education systems, institutions and strategies.
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of alternative practices using a range of data and criteria.
3. Identify key themes and theories and draw comparisons between the main theorists and educationalists.
4. Consider current debates and issues for education.

Content:

This module combines a historical, sociological and philosophical study of educational theory and individuals who have developed theory into alternative modes or institutions of education.

Examples studied could include:
Binet, A S Neill, Montessori, Steiner, Reggio Emilia, Froebelian, Eysenck, Eisner

Students will begin to develop their understanding of theory and begin to draw together concepts from the other modules and from their reading and investigations. They will debate what constitutes educational success and apply their findings to the alternative systems introduced.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
