EDS4022 - Institutions of Learning

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the development of the current structure of educational institutions.
2. Examine differences in institutional values, motivations and purpose in light of current educational priorities.
3. Debate issues related to political and social notions of success utilizing national statistical data.
4. Review personal experiences of learning institutions.

Content:

This module introduces students to the institutionalizing of education through the historical development of Early Years, primary, secondary, further and higher education.
The development of the current educational institutional structure will be explored in terms of rationale for changes, political priorities, cultural influences and strategy developments. Students will evaluate what constitutes success in education from a range of sources and perspectives, including statistical data related to assessment and engagement in education.
Students will debate notions of success, including the value of formal education against apprenticeships, vocational learning etc. Current issues will be considered eg Personalized learning, lifelong learning, education for employment.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate, ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
