EDS4002 - Introduction to Education Studies

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the theoretical perspectives introduced in the module and how these may relate to the major disciplines: the history, psychology, sociology of education and learning and teaching.
2. Communicate a basic awareness of how the disciplines impact on a study of education.
3. Reflect on a personal perspective of education related to the perspectives discussed.
4. Draw the themes together in a visual and written format.

Content:

This introductory module explores the major disciplines involved in a study of education: history, psychology, sociology of education and learning and teaching.

The module will include an introductory study of:

History: philosophical perspectives - nativism, empiricism, rationalism
Psychology: theories of learning, constructivism and behaviourism
Sociology: political and social ideologies - determinism, social construction
Learning: theories of learning styles - visual, auditory, kinesthetic, multiple intelligences, neuro processing research.

Learning and Teaching Information:

Learning will take place in interactive sessions incorporating theoretical input, discussion, debate ICT research and student presentation. Students will be supported by VLE materials, constructed reading and research tasks and workshop sessions.
