CHY5022 - Professional Development and Placement in Childhood and Youth

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) Demonstrate the application of social and psychological concepts and theories to analysis of the workplace
(2) Demonstrate reflective evaluation of strengths and weaknesses accross a range of employability skills
(3) Apply employability skills in the workplace and perform to a satisfactory standard
(4) Write an action plan for developing skills

Content:

professional development programme comprising:

(1) Introduction to Professional Development Planning and Placements
(2) Workshops including:
- working with young people: presentations by practitioners on their roles and career development
- Team work
- Assessment Centre tasks
- Briefings on EPO procedures and arranging placements
- Review of current employability skills and preparation for placement assessment
(3) Interview with placement tutor
(4) Placements with suitable organisation(s) normally six weeks in total
(5) Reflection and evaluation of the placement

Learning and Teaching Information:

- Induction meeting with EPO and careers.
- Day conference: presentations, briefings, discussions and practical exercises (role play, drafting and writing) relating to the requirements of the preparatory portfolio and report.
- Individual tutorials with placement/progress tutor before the placement starts.
