On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Explore the wider ethical concerns and social impact of business and the role of no-for-profit organisations.
2. Understand the political and economic context in which Social Enterprises operate.
3. Research and analyse a variety of Social Enterprise organisations.
4. Demonstrate experience of working individually and within a team-presenting information, analysis and evaluation.
This module will cover:
1. Wider ethical concerns and social impact of business including concepts such as Corporate Social Responsibility and Corporate Governance.
2. An outlines of the political context in which support for Social Enterprise has emerged including contemporary UK government policy.
3. The range of organisational forms that constitute Social Enterprise and their role and position within the UK economic context.
4. Organisational issues and challenges in the management and performance of Social Enterprise.
5. A varied and in-depth examination of a range of Social Enterprise through the use of case-studies, guest speakers, and (where practicable) visits.
Two hour lectures/workshops will be the standard form of delivery over the first half of each semester. This will include case study analysis, guest speakers, visits (where practicable) and guest lectures from academics with relevant expertise eg politcal context; legal forms.
In the latter part of semester 1 contemporary case-studies will be presented through a series of student-led assessed seminars.
The latter part of semester 2 will be scheduled for carrying out individual research.
