BAM4302 - Introduction to SMES (small and medium sized enterprises)

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 explain the main features of SMEs and critically evaluate current theories around small and medium sized business;
2 explain the importance of SMEs both in the EU , developing and other developed countries and critically assess their role in the economy
3 Explain the paradox between the growth and continuing existence of SMEs in a global world
4 Evaluate case studies of various SMEs and explain their success or failure.

Content:

The module will examine how SMEs start and who is involved. It will consider the idea of entrepreneurship and its relevance to SMEs. The module will look at the place of SMEs in the UK , European Economies and developing countries and examine how important they are in terms of jobs, output, promoting competition and exporting. It will look at case studies of a number of SMEs to see how they started and how successful they have been.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be taught through lectures and tutorials, with an opportunity for students to participate and give presentations of their work as part of the tutorial process

001 Assessed essay 1 x 2000 words (end of sem 1) 50%
