BAM4062 - Law in Context

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

(1) explain and comment upon the development of English law and contemporary law reform and the role of the legal profession;
(2) critically examine the political and social context of law and the distinction between morality, ethics and law;
(3) demonstrate their knowledge and understanding clearly and effectively in written form.

Content:

The module will give students an opportunity to gain understanding of the historical development of English Law and law reform today in the context of political and social pressures resulting, for example, from technological and social change; the role of political and pressure groups and the Law Commission. The distinction between legal, moral and ethical rules will be examined. The role and training of the legal profession will be explored including the appointment of the judiciary. The role of lay members of the public in judicial processes will also be examined.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered by a core of weekly lectures supported by weekly small group teaching. In the second semester project tutorials will allow students to concentrate on areas within the syllabus of this module which are of particular interest or relevance to other parts of their study within their degree programme.
