Students should gain an understanding of the main features of the English legal system, including sources of law, organisation of the legal system and court structure; distinction between civil and criminal law; European Union law-making and institutions. Additionally, the key principles of the law of contract will be studied including formation of contracts, terms, vitiating factors; discharge of contracts, remedies for breach of contract and limitation of actions.
The module will also address the issue of legal entities but in outline only so as to enable a distinction to be made between for example, companies and partnerships.
Basic skills in legal methodology will be gained, together with introductory level skills in seeking out primary sources of law including internet sources.
The module will be delivered by weekly lectures supported by weekly small group sessions in the form of tutorials. In tutorials all students in the group will be expected to discuss questions, including legal problems, issued in advance based on common set reading and some basic and limited research into primary sources of law. Some sessions will be operated on the basis of team work. Four tutorials will be operated on a surgery basis for the planning of assignments and feedback.
