BAM4022 - Management and Organisational Behaviour

Objectives:

On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:

1 analyse the nature of organisations, their environments and structures
2 outline and evaluate the development of management theory and practice
3 explain the roles, responsibilities and purposes of the different management specialisms in organisations
4 evaluate the processes involved in the management of people and change in organisations
5 explain the structures and demonstrate processes involved in communication, decision-making and conflict in organisations.

Content:

The nature of organisations and their environment. Classical and contingency approaches to the design of organisations. The development of management theory. Functional specialisms in management. Organisational behaviour: leadership, motivation, group formation and behaviour, teams, communication structures and processes, decision-making, conflict, change.

Learning and Teaching Information:

The module will be delivered by a series of lectures and small group tutorials in Semester 1. In Semester 2 a core lecture programme will also be delivered and students will be organised in seminar groups. Within each group, sub-groups will be formed to present a seminar paper. This structure is designed to develop students’ group working skills, communication and presentation skills.

001 Unseen paper 1 x 2 hours 50%
002 Assessed essay 2 x 1500 words 50%
